Mentor Information
Thank you for your interest in the UNSW Medicine Clinical Mentoring Scheme. Your valuable contribution as an experienced clinician will greatly benefit students who are beginning their clinical journey.
Your role as a mentor
Mentors guide their mentees through a series of informal meetings and help them to identify and achieve a range of goals that will support students in their clinical years and beyond. Mentors act as role models, provide wisdom and insights into the world of clinical practice, as well as constructive feedback and suggestions for action in order for students to meet their goals.
Possible goals of the CMS could include:
- clinical supervision and advice, such as discussing difficult patients or light bulb moments and assisting you to process your clinical experiences and challenges
- advice about clinical skills development
- issues with course progression and addressing remediation needs
- information about specialties and careers in medicine
- professional behaviours such as leadership, effective communication and working in multi-disciplinary teams
- reflective practice, problem solving, workplace learning and professional identity
- helping to navigate the clinical world/ hospital system
- providing an insider’s perspective on medical practice
- pastoral care and support
